Rugby quiz: Questions and answers
1. What was the final score between England and Australia in the 2003 Rugby World Cup final? Okay, so I had to start my rugby quiz questions on a high. The final score in the 2003 Rugby World Cup final was Australia 17-20 England.
2. Who is credited with inventing Rugby Union? That would be William Webb Ellis. He was the one who picked up a football, tucked it under his arm and ran around with it at Rugby School (which is where the name rugby comes from too).
3. What international team are known as The Pumas? Argentina
4. Who coached the Lions to their infamous series victory over South Africa in 1997? Sir Ian Mcgeechan was the head coach, and Jim Telfer gave the legendary ‘Everest’ speech before the first test.
5. Which three players hold the record for most tries in a single Rugby World Cup campaign? (1 point each) Jonah Lomu (1995), Brian Habana (2007) and Julian Sevea (2015) all scored 8 tries in those tournaments.
6. What name links a fictional comic character with the 118th captain of England? That’s Jason Robinson, aka Billy Whizz.
7. Who is the most capped Test player of all time, and how many caps does he have? (1 point each) Richie McCaw has 148 caps. Alun Wyn Jones is one behind him with 147, but will overtake him this year.
8. Who is England’s top try scorer? Rory Underwood scored an incredible 49 tries in his England career.
9. Who were the first ever Test match opponents of the British and Irish Lions? The 1888 British Lions Tour was initially to New Zealand & Australia, so both countries needed for the point.
10. In which city did Ireland inflict their first ever defeat on New Zealand? Chicago in the USA in 2018.
11. Who is the youngest player to reach 50 Tests for his country, aged 23 days and 110 days? This is a tricky question, but it was Vasil Lobzhanidze for Georgia. The record was previously held by George North for Wales who was 23 years and 138 days when he hit 50 caps. Worryingly, North is already up to 98 caps (including 3 Lions caps) and he’s only 28 years old! If he goes on as long as Alun Wyn Jones he could possibly get to 200 caps.
12. Where was the 2023 Rugby World Cup held? That was France.
13. Who is the Six Nations’ all-time top try scorer with 26 tries? That’s the legend Brian O’Driscoll. He’s also Ireland’s top try scorer with 46 tires in total.
14. Who scored the winning drop goal in the 1995 world cup final? Well done if you got this one right! With the scores tied at 12-12 in the second period of extra time, up stepped Joel Stransky to kick the winning drop goal. Closest final ever.
15. Who has won the 6 Nations the most number of times? England with 28 outright wins and 10 shared wins. Wales are one behind on 27 wins.
16. What year was it when Italy last won in the 6 Nations? And for a bonus point, who was it against? (1 point each) You have to go all the way back to 2015 when Italy beat Scotland 22-19 in Rome. That’s 5 years without a win in the 6 Nations. Shocking.
17. What was the infamous call by captain Willie John McBride on the 1974 Lions tour for all hell to break loose? The ‘99′ call was invented by Willie John McBride on the 1974 Lions tour. Worried that players were going to be targeted and injured by the provincial teams in South Africa, he wanted a call to retaliate and fight back, the whole team together. He knew the referee couldn’t send off a whole team, so the 99 call was to show solidarity. It’s become legend that highlights the Lions weren’t ever to be messed with.
18. Where did Ireland used to play international rugby before the new Aviva Stadium was built at Lansdowne Road? Between 2007-2010, Ireland played at Croke Park.
19. Which country won the last Olympic gold medal at Rio 2016 in the 7’s? Everyone’s 2nd favourite team, Fiji. It was also the country’s first ever gold medal too!
20. Who is Scotland’s top international points scorer? With 809 points, it’s the metronomic Chris Paterson.
21. What is the nickname for the Japanese rugby team? They are officially known as the Cherry Blossoms, and most recently the Brave Blossoms after beating South Africa in the 2015 Rugby World Cup, the biggest upset ever. I’ll accept either answer!
22. Who won the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2017? England won the last Women’s Rugby World Cup
23. Which country performs the ‘Sipi Tau’ before a game? That one is Tonga. All the Pacific nations teams (including New Zealand) perform a tribal war dance as a challenge to the opposing team before a match.
24. Which Springbok scored 5 drop goals against England in the 1999 World Cup quarter-final in Paris? This one still hurts me – it was Jannie de Beer. If you rewatch it a couple of the drop goals are absolutely huge.
25. Who scored the fastest international try and for which team? (1 point for each) It was John Leslie for Scotland. He scored a try in 10 seconds in the 1995 5 Nations Championship.
